The recent Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda event in Puglia, Italy was a resounding success, which isn’t surprising. Countless celebrities graced the stone streets of Alberobello wearing D&G finery for the multi-day fashion celebration, including Oscar winner Helen Mirren, trendy Kim Kardashian and soul music icon Diana Ross. It’s hard to choose favorites from such a brilliant ensemble of stars and outfits, but one name coming up over and over: Kerry Washington and Anitta.

What made this year’s show stand out was the way the Italian dressmakers dialed down the glam factor — just a bit — and emphasized their Sicilian heritage. Puglia is a region that revels in artisanal crafts, local traditions and aged structures. Dolce & Gabbana harnessed this theme to design dresses that felt both elegant and traditional at the same time.
Of course, these pieces were still bold and vibrant, but they also included elements created by local artisans, such as handcrafted jewelry, crocheted fabrics, lace accents, embroidery and even some basket weaving for good measure. The looks were completely unlike any runway show the duo has presented before, true to the glamour the Dolce & Gabbana name is known for, but more down to earth and reflexive.
Anitta: Timeless Culture and Modern Fire
Brazilian Grammy-nominated singer Anitta really got into the spirit of the Alta Moda event and its Southern Italian backdrop. Her outfits combined intricate traditional accents with plenty of eye-catching opulence. Few of those present could keep from being surprised every time she walked down the granite steps. Every look just kept getting better and better.
Her first Dolce & Gabbana outfit featured the previously mentioned basket weaving, carefully crafted into a top that managed to feel classic and sensual at the same time. With details inspired by the Italian countryside, the Swiss Alps and other European locations from past centuries, this outfit gave Anitta the look of a farmer’s daughter turned vineyard baroness.
The next look was arguably the best of the entire celebration, certainly the ideal look for the Brazilian singer. Every tiny detail of the gold-lace Dolce & Gabbana dress seemed perfect for her completion and contours, from the elegantly embroidered boots to the black tulle gloves and veil. She played the part of goddess and seductress perfectly, with a dignity worthy of Italy.
The third dress was nearly as impressive, with is incredible considering how jaw-dropping the previous look was. The vibrant red skirt reveled in its thigh-high slit and shined beautifully with hundreds of suspended crimson crystals. It felt like the perfect marriage of Brazilian samba and Spanish flamenco, lighting up the evening air with excitement.

Kerry Washington — Hollywood actress, producer, and director — also had several head-turning outfits in Puglia. Not everyone loved her sheer bright-yellow first look, but her second and third dresses were absolutely spectacular.
